Establishment of the Department of Manpower and Employment
 

The Department of Manpower and Employment has been established with effect from 01-01-2010 under the Ministry of Labour Relations and Productivity Promotion (former Ministry of Labour Relations and Manpower) as notified by Gazette Extraordinary no. 1640/31 dated 12-02-2010.

 
History

The subject of Employment Promotion, Employment Planning, Employment and Labour Market Information, Career and Vocational Guidance Programmes, Training for re-employment had been vested in the Ministry of Labour Relations and Manpower since 2007, and accordingly the Employment Division (comprising of Employbility Unit, Employment Creation Unit and Labour Market Information Unit) and Career Guidance Division had been established.

In consequent to a decision of the Cabinet of Ministers on 26-12-2009, in respect of the Cabinet memorandum of 12-08-2009 submitted by Hon. Athauda Swenevirathna (then Minister of Labour Relation and Manpower), the Department of Manpower and Employment has been established.

Powers and functions vested in the department:

Formulation and implementation of National Policy on Manpower and Employment.

Employment Creation and Promotion.

  Power of Functions

Career Guidance Programmes.

  Power of Functions

Labour Market Information, collection, analyzing and dissemination Services offered by Jobs Net.

  Power of Functions All matters connected or incidental to the above subjects.
