Foreign Employment
The informations in relation to the foreign employment is presented in this section. The data for the analysis was mainly collected fro the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment.

Table - 5.1 Departures for Foreign Employment by Important Countries and by Sex (2002-2006)

Shown in the table 5.1 for the years 2002, through 2006 is the additional foreign employment for two groups; male and female in each year. Several features stand out in the data shown there. First, female departures for foreign employment are higher than male over the year; indicating that housemaid as occupation is still dominating all other occupations for migrant workers in the foreign labour market. Second features is that, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE and Lebanon are important countries in provide large employment opportunities for Sri Lankan female while Saudi Arabia, Qatar and UAE are important in terms of male employment. Third, foreign employment in the year 2006 has declined with compared to the previous year.

As shown in the table 5.2 the reason for the highest number of complains was reported as lack of communication followed by complains of non payment of agreed wages and complains of physical and sexual harassment. Further, the data shows that the total number of complains is increasing rapidly over the years.

The table 5.3 indicates that Remittance is very important to the Sri Lankan economy. Therefore strategies should be implemented in such a way that remittances are enhanced.

Figures from 5.2 to 5.8 represent foreign sector job demand and supply by manpower level. According to the graphs in the professional level there is a big gap between demand and supply.

Sri Lanka Bureau of foreign employment has taken steps to save the life of the Sri Lankan house maids through of ideal and legal channels. As well as SLBEF has been conducting several training and departure or orientation programmes as they follows,

1. Training in house keeping and orientation programmes for unskilled female migrant workers to non middle east countries (21 days) And M.E.(12 days)
2. Unskilled workers to South Korea (18 days)
3. Awareness Programme for unskilled female workers with experience of working abroad but do not
possess documents to prove it (1Day)
4. Basic literacy course residential (18 days) for those who lack basic orbiting skills in Sinhala and
Tamil literacy
5. Industrial Sewing training programme (40 days)
